Elizabeth Lowe suffered a back injury during her service in the Army. She also damaged her right leg and is unable to straighten it. Through the power of sport, Lowe has persevered against her injuries. She will be representing the British Armed Forces in Swimming.

Ray Lowrie completed two tours of Afghanistan but shattered his ankle during a training incident in Norway. The accident resulted in his leg being amputated. A former national champion rower before his injury, Lowries continued with his love of rowing and started taking part in adapted Indoor Rowing events.

Whilst on deployment in Afghanistan James Macintyre stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device. This resulted in the loss of his right leg. “Soldier On” has played a key part in his recovery. He will be competing in Track running, Cycling and Swimming.

In April 2011, Marine Don Maclean, stood on an IED whilst on patrol in Afghanistan. The device partially detonated, shattering his heel and breaking bones in his right foot and ankle. To aid his recovery, Help for Heroes and BattleBack gave Maclean opportunities to take his hobby of cycling and make it not just a vital tool in his recovery, but a future career within it too. He cycled in the Race Across America during June 2012 as part of an eight man team raising money for Help for Heroes. Maclean has also taken part twice in the Help for Heroes Big Battlefields Bike Ride. He will be representing the British Armed Forces in Cycling.

Maurice Manuel was severely injured during his service in the Danish army. This resulted in his right leg below the knee being amputated, and the bottom left half of his Latissimus Dorsi removed. This has not held Manuel back, a keen sportsmen who likes a challenge, he will be representing Denmark in Athletics, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby.

Corie Mapp was injured in 2010 by an Improvised Explosive Device blast in Afghanistan, where he lost both legs below the knee and suffered other severe injuries. Once flown back to Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital, he was place in an induced coma for eight days and underwent multiple surgeries. Mapp is determined and hardworking, and testament to these qualities is the fact that he was walking on prosthetics legs within two weeks of waking from his coma. He soon discovered the restorative nature of sport, and in particular a passion and talent for Sitting Volleyball.

During his time in the Navy, Samuel Orlando Maraldo suffered from a number of injuries which he acquired. However, this has not stopped Maraldo from competing in a number of sporting events. He will be hoping to compete in Archery and Sitting Volleyball.

Moreno Marchetti was serving in the Army when he was involved in an accident in service where he lost both of his legs. He discovered shot put and javelin throwing after the accident, and after a few months he became national champion in both events in his classification. He will take part in Athletics and Wheelchair Rugby.

Luc Martin was injured on a tour in Afghanistan after his convoy was targeted by a suicide vehicle. He sustained internal damages to muscle and ligaments as well as a traumatic brain injury. “Soldier On” has helped him overcome his injury by financing a road bike and bow for his competitions. He will be competing in Archery and Cycling.

Angela Mason-Matthews suffers from Bilateral Osteoarthritis caused by an operational injury. She has persevered through her recovery period, and has since taken part in a number of swimming events. Mason-Matthews is proud to be representing the British Armed Forces in the sport. She will be competing in Swimming.

Peter Mason-Smith suffered traumatic injuries to his brain and lungs, whilst also breaking a number of bones, when serving in the EOD Squadron HQ. Since then Peter has used sport as a means of recovery, and will be representing New Zealand in a number of sports during the Games.
