In April 2011, Marine Don Maclean, stood on an IED whilst on patrol in Afghanistan. The device partially detonated, shattering his heel and breaking bones in his right foot and ankle. To aid his recovery, Help for Heroes and BattleBack gave Maclean opportunities to take his hobby of cycling and make it not just a vital tool in his recovery, but a future career within it too. He cycled in the Race Across America during June 2012 as part of an eight man team raising money for Help for Heroes. Maclean has also taken part twice in the Help for Heroes Big Battlefields Bike Ride. He will be representing the British Armed Forces in Cycling.
