Gareth Golightly’s career as a vehicle specialist in the Royal Logistic Corps ended less than a year after it had begun, when he lost a leg following a car accident driving back to the barracks. Golightly was determined to fight back from his injuries, which included nerve damage and a shattered pelvis. Sport has played a vital role in his recovery, and an introduction to wheelchair basketball led him to find out about the Help for Heroes Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick. Phoenix House provided Golightly and his family the support they needed. It was not soon after he took up Hand Cycling and completed a 423 mile Hero Ride from Edinburgh to London. Golightly’s goal is to compete in the 2016 Paralympics as part of the British Wheelchair Basketball team. He will be representing the British Armed Forces team in Wheelchair Basketball.
